Rows of Camaros and pickups with fresh paint lined North Tennessee Avenue the evening of August 8, the kind of scene the local station WLAF has taken to photographing when the cars come out. It looked like the whole town's social calendar in one frame. It wasn't.
Out along Norris Lake, a full week of live music, taco nights, and Sunday worship services was already running its own separate schedule.
What's Actually Happening on North Tennessee Avenue
The cruise-in on North Tennessee Avenue is the closest thing LaFollette has to a signature weekly gathering downtown. Owners park nose-out along the curb, hoods up, engines occasionally running just so somebody can hear them. It draws the kind of crowd that already knows each other's cars by sound.
The cruise-in takes place once a week, on Saturday; downtown restaurants follow their own schedules through the week.
Other activities continue in different parts of the area through the week.
The Lake Doesn't Clock Out After Friday
Sugar Hollow Marina, out at the end of Marina Lane, runs close to a full week on its own. Thursdays bring taco night with acoustic music, Fridays add Prime Rib Fridays alongside live bands like Ryan Adams & The SOBs and Thor and The Reigns, Saturdays through August have kept a standing live music slot on the calendar, and Sundays close out with an 11 a.m. gathering called Worship on the Water. A few coves over, Whitman Hollow Marina picks up Friday evening with its own live band, keeps the music going into Saturday afternoon and evening, and eases into Sunday with an acoustic set. Deerfield Cove Marina, part of Deerfield Resort, brings in touring acts like FOURKAST for Saturday evening shows at its Tiki Hut. Indian River Marina, out toward Jacksboro, has run its own Sunday acoustic sets this summer.
Laid out by night, the contrast is hard to miss:
| Night | On the Lake | Downtown |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | Taco night and acoustic music at Sugar Hollow Marina | Kitchens are mostly dark, Central Avenue is quiet |
| Friday | Prime Rib Fridays and live bands at Sugar Hollow Marina, another live band at Whitman Hollow Marina | Seven Loaves Kitchen and Leonz House of Steak and Subs open for dinner |
| Saturday | Live music at Sugar Hollow Marina, Whitman Hollow Marina, and Deerfield Cove Marina's Tiki Hut | Classic cars line North Tennessee Avenue, Greeneview Farms Market occasionally books its own show |
| Sunday | Worship on the Water at Sugar Hollow Marina, acoustic sets at Whitman Hollow and Indian River marinas | Most restaurants are closed or running short hours |
Read across the rows and the pattern is plain. The lake books four nights. Downtown has the Saturday car show and restaurants following their own schedules through the week.
There are options beyond the Saturday cruise-in.
Downtown Restaurant Schedules
Seven Loaves Kitchen, the farm-to-table spot that took over a former jewelry store on East Central Avenue, keeps its doors open Tuesday through Friday and closes for the weekend entirely. Leonz House of Steak and Subs runs the opposite shift, opening Thursday through Saturday for its prime rib special and staying dark the rest of the week. Backdoor Cafe, decorated in local memorabilia and motorcycle parts, keeps a steady crowd on its wings and corn dogs most nights it's open. Sidelines Bar & Grill has built a following on the kind of quiet, regular-table atmosphere that draws the same faces back weekly. The Local has earned its name serving the kind of country cooking people drive across town for on a weeknight.
Those restaurant schedules offer a useful point of comparison with the lake calendar.
The lake's calendar lists events on several nights through late summer. Downtown's calendar includes five or six kitchens that each follow their own schedules.
Community Gatherings Around LaFollette
National Night Out landed on its usual first Tuesday of August this year, drawing LaFollette Police and Fire out to Seargeant's Park for a tradition that's been marked on that same date nationally since 1984. The gathering lasted a couple of hours.
Last weekend included a gospel fundraiser, as WLAF reported. On Friday evening, Katie's Restaurant hosted a gospel singing as a community fundraiser. Saturday afternoon, the second half of that fundraiser moved to Greeneview Farms Market, the sixth-generation family farm on Holstein Drive that sells its own beef, eggs, and honey out of a small storefront. Grand Ole Opry performer Greg Marlow headlined, with sixteen-year-old Colton Harris and Hunter Logan opening. It was free to attend, donations only.
That Saturday show at Greeneview Farms Market is a small, useful example of what LaFollette actually looks like when you stop assuming it only has one center. It's not downtown. It's not the lake. It's a farm stand a few minutes off Central Avenue that hosted a touring gospel act for a community fundraiser, on the same Saturday the cars were parking on North Tennessee Avenue and the marinas were running full bands into the evening.
LaFollette's summer calendar extends beyond North Tennessee Avenue. A drive out to the water on a weeknight offers another part of the picture.
